What is HughesNet?

Why not make your life easier? HughesNet is the high-speed Internet solution that really works! It's time to get the reliability that comes with satellite technology and say good-bye to phone lines and dial-up data modems! What's great about HughesNet is that it's available to everyone in the contiguous US with a clear view of the southern sky, HughesNet offers a super-fast, always-on Internet connection. The benefits abound, including instant online access and the ability to surf and open pages faster and download files in a fraction of the time it takes on a dial-up modem. You can surf the web without interruptions or hassles. Flip through web pages like you would a book, scanning for the information that is most important to you.

What equipment do you need for HughesNet?

The specific satellite dish is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers. The accompanying HN7000S modem automatically upgrades software when new versions become available (self-hosting), uses two-way satellite communication for setup and operation and comes with an Ethernet connection to provide easy connection to your computer or home network.

How fast is HughesNet?

Note that because all Internet technologies (satellite or land-based) share available network bandwidth in one way or another, the actual speeds may vary from these estimated speeds listed below.

The HughesNet® Home service plan gives you download speeds up to 700 Kbps, with typical speeds of about 500 Kbps to 600 Kbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 128 Kbps, are typically 70 Kbps to 80 Kbps during peak hours.

The HughesNet Pro plan connects you to the Internet with maximum download speeds of up to 1.0 Mbps, with typical speeds about 650 Kbps to 750 Kbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 200 Kbps, are typically 100 Kbps to 125 Kbps during peak hours.

The HughesNet ProPlus plan connects you to the Internet with maximum download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps, with typical speeds about 750 Kbps to 800 Kbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 200 Kbps, are typically 100 Kbps to 125 Kbps during peak hours.

How do I order HughesNet?

You can order online through Expert HughesNet or call us and our friendly sales reps will help you.

What about HughesNet technology?

HughesNet® lets you connect your computer to the Internet whether you are running a Windows or Macintosh operating system. The following minimum requirements make sure that you get optimal HughesNet service:

* Windows 98SE or higher (including VISTA) or Mac OS 10.1 or higher, and
* Network capability (10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped)

Can I operate a small network with HughesNet?

It is possible to connect multiple home computers and laptops to a single HughesNet® Internet connection. But it's up to the customer to access home networking equipment which may be required and which is not included with your HughesNet system. You'll need to contact your network hardware manufacturer and/or operating system software developer for network details, as HUGHES® is not responsible for home network configuration or management.

Since a small network means that all computers will be sharing a single connection, which in turn means that multiple users will use high-bandwidth applications simultaneously, speed may be affected and there could be interruptions. Note that speed is subject to the HughesNet Fair Access Policy.

If you'd like, when you set your installation appointment, you can inquire if a HughesNet certified installer is available to hook up your small network. However, home networks are not included or supported by HUGHES technical support.

How does billing work?

You will not be billed until the day you are installed and your HughesNet® service is activated. On that day, your first bill will include charges for HughesNet equipment (satellite modem and dish), standard installation by a professional installer, monthly service fee (advance billing), optional services (if selected at time of purchase), and any applicable taxes.

Initial orders must be made via a valid credit/debit card. After the initial order, you may choose instead to receive a monthly invoice for an additional fee of $5. Additional fees for non-standard installations will be payable directly to the professional installer at time of installation.

High-Speed Internet Benefits

Can I use a PCMCIA card adapter for my laptop?

Yes. To connect your computer to the HughesNet® modem you need either a 10/100 Ethernet Network Interface Card or a PCMCIA adapter with an Ethernet connector. In fact, the HughesNet system comes with an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the HughesNet modem.

Does DIRECTV share equipment/billing with HughesNet?

No, the dish you need for HughesNet is different than the dish used for DIRECTV. Billing is done separately as well, and at this time there are no special deals.

Does HughesNet need to be professionally installed?

HughesNet follows the mandate set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that trained professionals must install any satellite system that both sends and receives signals.

How long does it take to get set up?

On average, it takes about 2 weeks from the time of placing an order to get set up with HughesNet. A certified HughesNet® installer will contact you within 3 days and then you and the installer will work out a mutually agreeable date and time for your installation. If less than 2 weeks is too soon for you, you can simply wait to place your order until later.

What is transmission latency and how will it affect my service?

Think of transmission latency as the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. Satellite service involves data traveling all the way up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This distance (round trip) adds about a half-second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Web site or host server. Therefore, time-sensitive applications that require no variations from the ideal speed and that require fractions-of-a-second user inputs (such as certain multi-player games or real-time equities trading) are not recommended with HughesNet®.
HughesNet® Home Service is not compatible with VPNs.

Can I use a VPN with HughesNet?

Technically you can use a VPN with HughesNet, but you might experience reduced speeds of as much as 50-75%. As soon as you disable your VPN client when your session is over, you can restore your connection to full speed. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide help with configuring or troubleshooting problems associated with VPN clients.

HughesNet® acceleration techniques achieve high-speed performance over satellite by accessing data packet header information This is blocked when IPSec-based VPNs are used because VPNs encrypt the data such that information travels through a secure tunnel through the HughesNet network. The result is slower performance.
